Marriage License Application Information


1.    One applicant must be a resident of Fort Lee and provide proof of residency.

2.    Both applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

3.    If divorced, you must provide the name of your former spouse, the date the marriage was dissolved, and the location of the divorce.

4.    If widowed, you must provide the name of decedent, date, and location of death.

5.    The waiting period for obtaining your marriage license after completing the application is 72-hours. The license cannot be issued during this time period. In addition to this waiting period, all ceremony information - including date of ceremony, location of ceremony, and name and address of officiant - must be provided before the license can be issued.

6.    Once the marriage license has been picked up, it must be used within 30 days or it will expire.

7.    License fee is $28.00 and must be paid at the time of the application. 

8.    Marriage applications are taken Monday through Friday by appointment only between 8:30AM and 3:30PM. If you would like to schedule your marriage license application, or you have questions, please call the Department of Health at (201) 592-3500 x1510 and request to speak with a registrar.

To avoid delays, ensure you have the following when you arrive to complete your application:

  • Proof of identity which establishes legal name, date of birth, and proof of residency (Driver’s license, passport, or state/federal ID) for both applicants.
  • Proof of residency for the applicant who resides in Fort Lee, such as a Driver’s license, utility bill, or notarized letter from a landlord.
  • A witness who is 18 years of age or older 
  • Social security card or social security number for applicants who are U.S. citizens (Social security number is required by law for U.S. citizens and will be kept confidential)
