PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that as of August 1, 2002, the Borough of Fort Lee has instituted Ordinance #2002-31- An Ordinance Establishing Chapter 156 of the Revised General Ordinances "Tree Removal and Replacement."
Section 156-1. Purpose. It is the purpose of this ordinance to prevent environmental degradation; to preserve existing natural resources; to control the indiscriminate and excessive cutting and destruction of trees; to prevent the destruction of the aesthetic character of established neighborhoods within the Borough; and to provide for the replacement of trees when removed.
Section 156-2. Regulated Trees. As used in this ordinance, the word "tree" shall mean any woody plant having a diameter greater than 8 inches as measured at a height of four feet from existing grade (i.e.,at its base).
Section 156-3. Prohibited Activities. It shall be unlawful to remove, destroy or substantially alter in such a way as to impair or endanger the life of any tree without first obtaining a tree removal permit.
Section 156-4. Permitted Activities. The cutting, pruning or trimming of trees in a manner which is not harmful to the health of the tree and which will not endanger the tree's continued vitality is permitted.
Permits are now required to comply with the above said Ordinance, and may be obtained through the Fort Lee Building Department, 309 Main Street, Fort Lee, New Jersey. Hours of business being 8:30 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.
A copy of the Ordinance is on file with the Borough Clerk and the Building Department; and the same is available for inspection daily.
